New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban resigned on Thursday amid a federal investigation into the department’s nightclub enforcement. Caban, the city’s first Latino police commissioner, took over the department in July 2023 but decided to step down due to distractions created by recent developments. Mayor Eric Adams appointed Thomas Donlon as the interim police commissioner following Caban’s resignation. Caban’s phone was seized, and his twin brother, James Caban, who owns a nightclub security business, also had his phone seized in the corruption investigation involving the NYPD. Federal investigators are looking into whether James Caban profited from his ties to his brother and the NYPD.
Edward Caban’s lawyers stated that he is not a target of the investigation and expects to cooperate fully with the government. The FBI has searched the homes of multiple city officials and advisers close to Adams as part of a separate investigation focusing on whether the Adams campaign conspired with the Turkish government to receive illegal campaign contributions. Adams has not been officially accused of wrongdoing and has emphasized that he takes the investigations seriously.
In light of these developments, Mayor Adams accepted Caban’s resignation, stating that it was the best decision at this time. Adams expressed respect for Caban’s decision and wished him well in the future. The investigation into the department’s nightclub enforcement and potential corruption involving Caban and his brother continues, with federal authorities looking into possible connections between James Caban’s nightclub security business and special treatment by local precincts in New York City.
