Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado spoke with Senate Foreign Relations Chair Ben Cardin, thanking him for U.S. support in their fight against President Nicolás Maduro. Machado went into hiding after claims of electoral fraud by the opposition, and her ally Edmundo González sought asylum in Spain. Despite threats, Machado reassured Cardin that they will continue the fight for a democratic Venezuela. Thousands have protested against Maduro’s government, with reports of human rights violations by security forces and pro-government groups. Machado remains optimistic about their campaign, stating that if all Venezuelans had been able to vote, the result would have been overwhelmingly against Maduro. The U.N. Refugee Agency reports that nearly 8 million Venezuelans have left the country since 2014, the largest exodus in Latin America’s recent history. Despite the challenges, Machado emphasized the unity of Venezuelans in the fight for freedom and the return of their loved ones. Cardin reiterated U.S. support for Machado and the opposition cause, promising to stand by their side in the struggle for a free and democratic Venezuela.
