Pope Francis concluded his Asia Pacific tour with a visit to Singapore, where he warned about the negative impact of artificial intelligence on society. He emphasized the importance of using AI to promote understanding and solidarity, rather than isolating individuals. The pontiff also called for fair wages for migrant workers in the affluent city-state, highlighting their contributions to society.
During his visit, Pope Francis urged local officials to protect the dignity of migrant workers and ensure they receive fair pay. He addressed the issue of exploitation and poor living conditions faced by many foreign laborers in Singapore, advocating for better treatment and rights for these workers.
The pope’s remarks were welcomed by a Singapore NGO that works with migrant workers, who expressed full agreement with his call for fair wages. The International Labour Organization estimates that there are around 170 million migrant workers globally, comprising 5% of the global workforce.
Pope Francis also held a mass in Singapore, attended by thousands of faithful Catholics from across the region. The visit to Singapore marked the end of his tour, which also included stops in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and East Timor. The pope’s messages on AI and fair wages have resonated with many in the region, as he prepares to return to Rome.
