Joint naval exercises launched by Russia and China

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the United States of provoking an arms race and has emphasized the importance of Russia being prepared for any development. In response to this, Russia has launched joint navy drills with China in the Sea of Japan as part of the larger ‘Ocean-2024’ exercise. This exercise consists of naval drills spanning the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, the Mediterranean, Caspian, and Baltic Seas.

During the drills, Putin addressed military personnel, stating that the purpose of the exercise is to check the key aspects of combat readiness and strengthen military cooperation with friendly states. He believes that in the current climate of growing geopolitical tensions, this cooperation is especially important.

Putin criticized the United States for increasing military presence near Russia’s western borders, in the Arctic, and in the Asia-Pacific region under the pretext of countering the Russian threat and containing China. He stressed the importance of Russia being prepared for any situation that may arise.

The naval exercises, expected to last until September 16, are said to be the largest of their kind in three decades. Over 90,000 troops, more than 400 warships, submarines, and support vessels, as well as 120 aircraft and helicopters, are participating in the drills according to the Russian Defense Ministry. This display of military might reflects Russia’s commitment to ensuring its readiness in the face of potential threats.
