USC Honors Caleb Williams by Retiring No. 13 Jersey, Reinstates Reggie Bush’s No. 5

USC retired former quarterback Caleb Williams’ No. 13 jersey, as announced on Thursday. A banner with his number and the year he won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 will be displayed at the LA Coliseum. The retirement was a formality following his Heisman win in December, as USC only retires jersey numbers for Heisman winners. Linebacker Mason Cobb currently wears the No. 13 jersey, but once he leaves, no one else will wear it.

Additionally, Reggie Bush’s No. 5 jersey is also back among the Heisman numbers at the Coliseum. Bush won the Heisman in 2005, but his jersey was removed in 2010 after he forfeited the trophy due to impermissible benefits. USC was heavily sanctioned by the NCAA as a result, and the school disassociated from Bush for a decade. However, the disassociation ended in June 2020, and the Heisman Trust returned Bush’s trophy to him in April.

The decision to retire Williams’ jersey is a significant honor, given USC’s tradition of only retiring jersey numbers for Heisman winners. The return of Bush’s jersey to the Coliseum also marks a positive development after years of controversy surrounding his college career. Overall, these announcements showcase the ongoing legacy and impact of both Williams and Bush at USC.
