San Fernando celebrates ‘water independence’ with successful groundwater cleanup efforts

The City of San Fernando reached a significant water milestone on September 5, as State Sen. Caroline Menjivar and Metropolitan Water District Board Chair Adan Ortega joined city officials to mark the city’s “return to water independence.” Thanks to a system of groundwater wells and treatment systems, the city no longer needs to rely on outside water resources from MWD.

Last year, State Sen. Menjivar secured $3 million for the city’s water infrastructure, including funding for the nitrate treatment process for the city’s highest-producing well. The nitrates in the water are a remnant of the city’s agricultural past.

During a press conference, Menjivar, along with San Fernando Mayor Celeste Rodriguez, Vice Mayor Mary Mendoza, City Council members Mary Solorio and Victoria Garcia, and MWD Chair Adan Ortega, celebrated the city’s water independence at the San Fernando water booster station. City crews and MWD worked together to remove nitrates from the groundwater wells, allowing them to bring them back online.

The event was a significant moment for the city, signaling a step towards self-sufficiency in water resources. By taking control of their water supply, San Fernando is better positioned to ensure reliable access to clean water for its residents in the future.
