Republicans focus on prospective EV battery plant in Michigan to criticize Democrats over ties to China in key swing state

Last fall, voters in a rural Michigan community ousted five of seven township board members in a recall election over plans to build an electric vehicle battery plant by Gotion Inc., a Chinese company affiliated with the Communist Party of China. The issue has now become a focal point in the race for the White House, with Republican candidates, including former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance, opposing the project.

Trump and Vance have expressed concerns about Chinese involvement in the project and potential ties to the Communist Party. Vance’s visit to the area aimed to raise awareness about the issue and also criticized tax incentives and subsidies for green energy companies like Gotion.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer initially supported the EV battery plant, emphasizing job creation and economic development. However, the project has faced backlash from local residents and politicians, who fear environmental impact, job displacement, and Chinese government involvement.

The debate over Gotion has become partisan, with Republicans opposing the project, citing national security concerns and a desire to prioritize American manufacturing. Democrats view the issue as more hyperlocal and believe it won’t significantly impact elections in the state.

The Senate race in Michigan has also seen tensions over the Gotion project, with Republican Mike Rogers criticizing employment projections and accusing Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin of endorsing non-disclosure agreements related to the deal. Slotkin, on the other hand, has introduced legislation to enhance federal oversight of real estate purchases by companies linked to adversarial countries. The project remains controversial, with concerns over economic impact, national security, and transparency.
