The US Commerce Department has announced new export controls on quantum computers and semiconductor-manufacturing equipment, citing concerns about the use of advanced technologies by rivals like China. The restrictions were put in place following consultation with international partners, with the aim of strengthening relations with “like-minded countries” and preventing adversaries from developing technologies that threaten security.
This move is part of the US government’s efforts to curb China’s tech industry, including restrictions on advanced chips and related equipment. President Joe Biden’s administration has been urging allied countries to implement their own measures to limit China’s access to semiconductor technology. The Netherlands recently announced tighter controls on exports of semiconductor-making machines, citing increased security risks in the current geopolitical context.
Other countries, such as Japan, have also joined in on restricting advanced chip-making equipment to hinder China’s tech sector. Despite these efforts, China has been investing heavily in achieving self-sufficiency in advanced chips and is reported to be only about three years behind industry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd in chip production.
In response to the US’s actions, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the US of violating market principles and disrupting global supply chains, stating that this does not benefit any party involved. The escalation in export controls and restrictions on advanced technologies reflect the growing strategic rivalry between the US and China in the tech sector.
