Former President Donald Trump’s legal team challenged the legitimacy of his criminal case in a tense hearing before US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington, DC. The defence lawyer, John Lauro, questioned the charges and timing of the case, arguing for its dismissal based on a recent Supreme Court decision granting presumptive immunity to presidential actions. Lauro’s claims of unfairness sparked a sharp exchange with Judge Chutkan, who emphasized her focus on the criminal counts at hand, not the election timeline. Despite the defence team’s attempts to delay the trial, Chutkan maintained that the case had been pending for over a year and moved forward steadily. The case, which accuses Trump of attempting to overturn the 2020 US election results, has been updated to include his actions as a presidential candidate and with his re-election campaign. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include conspiracy to defraud the US and obstruct official proceedings. The prosecution, led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, highlighted Trump’s efforts to pressure election officials and encourage supporters to disrupt the certification of Electoral College votes on January 6, 2021. The recent Supreme Court decision did not nullify the actions in the updated indictment, and Judge Chutkan remains tasked with making decisions regarding the case’s progression. This hearing marked one of the first in nearly a year, reflecting the ongoing legal battles surrounding Trump’s alleged misconduct.
