The Los Angeles Rams will have to rely on a makeshift cornerback unit in their Sunday opener against the Detroit Lions, as Darious Williams has been placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury. The veteran cornerback, who was expected to start opposite Tre’Davious White, suffered the injury early in training camp. Cobie Durant may start in place of Williams, but he is also dealing with a hamstring injury.
Williams, who re-signed with the Rams on a three-year deal in March, was limited in practice before being placed on injured reserve. With Derion Kendrick also out for the season due to a knee injury, the Rams’ secondary has taken a hit.
Despite these setbacks, White, who is recovering from Achilles surgery, is set to start on Sunday. The Rams have added undrafted rookies Charles Woods and Josh Wallace to the cornerback roster.
Meanwhile, the Lions, led by quarterback Jared Goff and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, had one of the top offenses in the NFL in 2023. The Rams will need to find a way to contain this potent offense with their depleted cornerback unit.
It remains to be seen how the Rams will adjust to these injuries and whether the makeshift secondary will be able to contain the Lions’ explosive offense in Sunday’s opener.
