CBS News: New CIF rules implemented statewide for high school teams to regulate practice and game schedules during extreme heat conditions

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has announced new statewide rules regarding high school teams practicing and playing in extreme heat. The regulations aim to ensure the safety of student-athletes during periods of high temperatures.

The new guidelines specify that teams are prohibited from practicing or playing when the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) reaches 103 degrees or higher. This measurement takes into account temperature, humidity, wind speed, and sun angle to assess the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Additionally, the CIF rules state that teams must have access to shade, water, and periodic breaks during practices and games when the WBGT exceeds 82 degrees. Coaches are required to closely monitor athletes for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, and confusion.

These regulations come in response to a growing concern over the risks of heat-related illnesses for student-athletes, especially in sports like football and cross country that are often played in hot weather. By implementing these guidelines, the CIF aims to prioritize the health and safety of high school athletes and prevent heat-related incidents.

Coaches, athletic directors, and school officials are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new rules and ensure compliance to protect their athletes from the dangers of extreme heat. The CIF’s proactive approach to regulating practices and games in high temperatures reflects a commitment to safeguarding the well-being of student-athletes across the state.
