U.K. government to investigate Ticketmaster’s use of ‘dynamic pricing’ for Oasis tickets

Ticketmaster is under scrutiny in the U.K. following thousands of Oasis fans being disappointed by ticket prices for the band’s reunion tour. Culture minister Lisa Nandy plans to investigate Ticketmaster’s use of dynamic pricing, which caused prices to increase drastically while fans were trying to purchase tickets. Many fans abandoned their purchases or resorted to ticket-resale sites due to the high prices. Nandy aims to end “rip-off resales” and ensure tickets are sold at fair prices. The government will hold a consultation on ticket resale websites this autumn, with dynamic pricing now being included in the scope of the discussion. This issue is not new for Ticketmaster, as similar problems occurred in the U.S. with Taylor Swift tickets last year. Senator Amy Klobuchar criticized Ticketmaster for lack of competition leading to high fees, site disruptions, and other issues. The Senate held a hearing to address concerns about the lack of competition in the concert ticket industry and how it harms customers and artists. Nandy’s investigation into Ticketmaster in the U.K. aims to address similar issues of transparency, fairness, and competition in the ticketing industry.
