Think Pink, a waste management company in Sweden, is facing accusations of illegally dumping at least 200,000 tonnes of rubbish at 21 locations in 15 municipalities across the country. Eleven people, including the former CEO Bella Nilsson and her ex-husband Thomas Nilsson, have gone on trial for what prosecutors are calling the largest environmental crime in Sweden in terms of scope and organization. The defendants are accused of using falsified documents to mislead authorities and make a profit.
The waste allegedly dumped included toxic materials such as arsenic, lead, dioxins, and PCBs, which have been released into the air, soil, and water, causing environmental damage. In some cases, the rubbish dumps caught on fire, resulting in extensive damage. The Botkyrka council, for example, is seeking damages for waste piles that burned for months in 2020 and 2021.
Despite the accusations, Bella Nilsson, who has since changed her name to Fariba Vancor, maintains that the company operated within the law and claims to be a victim of a plot by rival businesses. The trial, which involves a police investigation of over 45,000 pages and 150 witnesses, is expected to continue until May 2025.
Prosecutors are seeking a ten-year ban on owning a business for the main defendants and two others involved in the case, a request that is disputed by the defendants. The trial sheds light on the importance of proper waste management practices and the consequences of illegal dumping on the environment.
