Pedro Almodóvar returns to the Venice Film Festival with his English-language debut film “The Room Next Door”, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. The movie, based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through”, follows two friends confronting life, death, and the controversial topic of euthanasia.
At 74, Almodóvar explains that making his first English-language film felt like starting a new genre. The director and cast members Swinton and Moore aimed to tell a story that was emotional but not melodramatic, despite dealing with the challenging topic of death.
The film advocates for euthanasia, a topic that is portrayed through Swinton’s character’s journey towards self-determination. Almodóvar called for greater access to euthanasia worldwide, sparking applause at the press conference.
“The Room Next Door” premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is set to release in Spain on October 18. The film presents a thought-provoking exploration of life, death, and the right to make decisions about one’s own fate. Almodóvar’s English-language debut continues to solidify his reputation as a master filmmaker.
