Muth takes home victory in Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar, following Pacific Classic – Daily News

Formidable Man emerged victorious in the Grade II Del Mar Derby, with jockey Umberto Rispoli securing three wins on his return from Kentucky Downs. However, the spotlight also shone on Muth, who won the $125,000 Shared Belief Stakes with trainer Bob Baffert eyeing the $1 million Grade I California Crown later in the month at Santa Anita for the colt.

Muth, the favorite, led the field in the Shared Belief Stakes, showcasing a strong performance after a long layoff. Jockey Juan Hernandez piloted Muth to victory, marking his 50th stakes win at Del Mar. Baffert praised Muth’s smart racing style and adaptability, setting his sights on the upcoming California Crown race.

In a tactical turf test, Formidable Man, ridden by Rispoli, made a late rally to clinch the victory over Stay Hot in a small field of six contenders. Trainer Michael McCarthy credited Formidable Man’s improvement race by race to his team’s efforts and praised the horse’s performance amid a competitive field.

Rispoli’s successful day, including wins with Bullard and Saltwater Cowboy, propelled him back into a tie for second place in the jockey standings at Del Mar. Notable stakes races continue at Del Mar, with Baffert and D’Amato fielding top contenders in the Tranquility Lake and Generous Portion stakes on Labor Day.

Despite a dip in handle compared to the previous year, the Pacific Classic weekend drew strong attendance, with exciting racing action and upsets like Bullard’s victory over Kalea Bay in the maiden race. As the summer meeting at Del Mar progresses, fans can anticipate more thrilling races and fierce competition on the track.
