The start of the collegiate football season was marked by chaos for DirecTV customers across America as they were unable to view the USC-LSU game due to a contract dispute between DirecTV and Disney, the owner of the broadcast channel ABC. The dispute has led to a blackout of live events with the four new Big Ten programs as well. Both Disney/ESPN and DirecTV have taken public stances on the issue, with Disney accusing DirecTV of denying millions of subscribers access to their content and DirecTV accusing Disney of seeking maximum profits at the expense of consumers.
In a related development, USC defensive tackle Bear Alexander, who missed most of spring ball, found himself on the bench for the start of the USC-LSU game despite being listed as an “OR” starter on the depth chart. Head coach Lincoln Riley praised Alexander’s progress, but noted that he still had a long way to go in terms of consistency on the field.
On the offensive side, LSU’s offensive line saw redshirt freshman Alani Noa lining up at right guard, completing a unit that has been stable and experienced since last season. Noa, who started at left guard last season, returned to the starting lineup after receiving buzz in the 2023 fall camp. The game was a showdown of contrasting offensive line units, with LSU’s stable unit facing off against USC’s constantly shifting lineup.
