DEL MAR – Gold Phoenix made history on Saturday by winning the Del Mar Handicap for the third consecutive year, joining an elite group of horses who have achieved a three-peat in graded stakes races at Del Mar. Trainer Phil D’Amato also had a remarkable day, winning three stakes races with Motorious in the Green Flash Handicap and Conclude in the Del Mar Mile.
Gold Phoenix, ridden by Kyle Frey this year, showed his fighting spirit by surging past his competitors in the final furlong of the 1 3/8-mile race. D’Amato praised Frey and his team for their efforts in training the horse to victory. Gold Phoenix’s win secured him a spot in the upcoming Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar.
In other races, Conclude led from gate to wire to win the Del Mar Mile, while Motorious rallied through the stretch to take the Green Flash Handicap. Hope Road, racing around two turns for the first time, dominated the Torrey Pines Stakes with a 5-length victory.
