Last-minute effort to aid Californians with electric bills does not succeed

An eleventh-hour proposal by California legislators to provide small relief from high electric bills has been pulled from consideration, likely ending any chance of passing before the legislative session ends. Assembly Bill 3121, which would have offered households a one-time credit funded by cuts to utility programs, was removed from the agenda by Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris. This comes after Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas expressed doubt about moving forward with energy measures this year that could impact Californians’ finances. The bill was part of a larger effort to address clean energy requirements while lowering electric rates in the state. Despite the setback, other energy bills, including one to study reducing transmission costs and promote efficient energy programs, remain in play. Governor Newsom and legislative leaders continue to stress the importance of addressing California’s energy challenges.
