Mercedies Escalante, a long-time resident of Delano, California, has taken on a new role as a peacekeeper with the non-profit Garden Pathways. Though violence prevention programs are common in larger cities, they are scarce in rural communities like Delano. However, since Garden Pathways expanded into Delano, there has not been a single gun homicide reported in the past year. Local leaders attribute this reduction in violence to the presence of the program in the community.
As Escalante reaches out to her neighbors, she focuses on promoting Garden Pathways’ various initiatives, such as mentorship programs, job training, and education opportunities.
