Trump stated that he wants to increase the number of babies and believes in the benefits of IVF, but did not provide details on how he would fund the plans. He also promised new parents the ability to deduct major newborn expenses from their taxes if he wins a second term.
In response to the six-week abortion ban in Florida, Trump called the limit too short and suggested that there should be more time allowed for the procedure. Additionally, he hinted at supporting a ballot measure in Florida to guarantee the right to an abortion until foetal viability.
The efforts to moderate the Republican Party’s stance on reproductive access comes as Trump seeks to improve his appeal among women voters. However, these moves could alienate religious and anti-abortion voters who are a significant part of the Republican base. Critics have voiced concerns that Trump’s evolving stance on abortion may create distrust among his pro-life supporters.
On the other hand, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has consistently portrayed Trump as a threat to women’s rights and has pledged to restore reproductive freedom if elected. Opinion polls indicate that Harris holds a lead over Trump among women voters, suggesting that Trump’s attempts at moderation on reproductive issues may be a strategic move to gain support in this demographic.
