A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has ordered the immediate suspension of social media platform X in the country after the company failed to comply with court orders. The decision follows an ongoing dispute between Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Elon Musk, which included the freezing of Starlink’s financial accounts in Brazil. The suspension of X will remain in place until all related court orders are met, including the payment of fines amounting to 18.5 million reais and the nomination of a legal representative in Brazil. The telecommunications regulator has been instructed to implement the suspension order and ensure its enforcement.
To prevent individuals or companies from using VPNs to bypass the blockage, de Moraes warned that fines of up to 50,000 reais per day could be imposed on those attempting to access X illegally. X, formerly known as Twitter, had previously been ordered to block certain accounts implicated in spreading distorted news and hate. In response to the censorship allegations, Musk closed X’s offices in Brazil, although the platform had assured that its services would still be available in the country.
The ongoing conflict over the X platform has also led to the blocking of Starlink’s local bank accounts, prompting the company to request the suspension of this decision. Amid these legal battles, the Brazilian Supreme Court continues to enforce measures against entities associated with Musk, illustrating the escalating tensions between the tech billionaire and Brazilian authorities.
