An Arlington National Cemetery official was pushed aside during an altercation with former President Trump’s staff, according to an Army spokesman. The incident occurred during a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of service members killed in the Afghanistan War withdrawal. The employee had tried to ensure that participants were following the rules, but declined to press charges despite the incident being reported to the police.
The Defense Department had warned Trump’s campaign not to take photographs in Section 60 of the cemetery, which is the burial site for military personnel who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Trump was photographed smiling and giving a thumbs up at gravesites during the ceremony, with markers of fallen servicemembers visible in the background.
The cemetery officials emphasized that political campaign activities are prohibited within Army National Military Cemeteries. Trump’s campaign spokesperson claimed that a private photographer was allowed, and accused the cemetery employee of blocking access to the event.
The Trump campaign defended their behavior, stating that they were invited by families of the service members killed in the airport bombing. Democrats criticized Trump’s handling of the incident, citing his past controversial remarks about military service members.
A Pentagon investigation into the Kabul airport attack concluded that it was not preventable, and the withdrawal from Afghanistan was initiated by Trump’s administration. Despite the altercation at Arlington National Cemetery, the Army reiterated its commitment to ensuring that ceremonies are conducted with dignity and respect for the fallen.
