A proposal to install benches near the La Jolla Recreation Center bocce court was discussed at a recent meeting of the La Jolla Community Recreation Group. Nearly a dozen players attended the meeting to support the idea of adding benches to the sidewalk near the court. Currently, players bring their own chairs, but they are seeking a more permanent seating solution for longer games.
Representative Chas. Dye stated that the players group would seek sponsorships or involve local Scout troops to help cover the costs of installing the benches. The group believes that having benches would enhance the experience of both players and spectators who stop to watch games. The logistics of the benches, including materials, costs, maintenance plans, and placement, are still to be determined.
Board members expressed support for the proposal, with some noting that the Rec Center is in need of enhancements. Former board member Mary Coakley Munk emphasized the need for benches, especially for older players who may have difficulty standing for extended periods.
While the proposal falls under the jurisdiction of the city, the board decided to support the idea in concept and asked the proponents to work with the appropriate city departments to gather more details. The bocce court, installed in 2021, was funded by the Friends of the La Jolla Recreation Center and Las Patronas.
In other news, the Recreation Center is currently under the supervision of an interim manager following the retirement of Rosalia Castruita, with no update on a permanent replacement. The next meeting of the La Jolla Community Recreation Group is scheduled for September 25 at the Recreation Center.
