The Ministry of Health in Andalusia has reported a total of five deaths due to the West Nile virus, with an estimated 10 more people infected in the region. This news has raised concerns in Spain, particularly in Seville, where two additional deaths have been recorded. Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been identified in towns near the Guadalquivir River, prompting calls for more effective measures to be taken to prevent further spread of the infection.
The World Health Organization has stated that 80% of those infected with the West Nile virus show no symptoms, but individuals over 50 and those with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk of developing severe forms of the disease. The virus, which is transmitted through mosquito bites, is most commonly found in birds but can also infect humans and animals.
Experts advise residents in affected areas to protect themselves from mosquito bites by using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and staying indoors during peak mosquito activity hours. Earlier this month, residents of Coria del Rio held a demonstration to raise awareness of the situation and to demand more proactive measures to combat the spread of the virus.
As cases continue to rise in Andalusia, authorities are working to contain the outbreak and prevent further fatalities. Public health officials are urging residents to take necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites and reduce their risk of contracting the West Nile virus.
