Republican criticizes Democratic opponent over ‘MeToo’ court controversy as California candidates clash in crucial district

In a contentious campaign for California’s Orange County seat, Republican Rep. Michelle Steel is facing criticism from her Democratic opponent, attorney Derek Tran, over his legal defense of a client accused of sexual harassment. Steel’s campaign is accusing Tran of blaming the victims for the harassment, with Tran hitting back, calling Steel out for her own record on women’s rights.

The case in question involves plaintiff Luis Pacheco, who alleged he was wrongfully fired after being accused of sexual harassment by two women. Tran defended Pacheco, claiming he was discriminated against due to his gender amid the “Me Too” movement.

Steel’s campaign has attacked Tran for his legal defense tactics, while Tran has accused Steel of prioritizing corporations and political extremists over women’s rights. Tran’s camp also criticized Steel for her voting record on issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault, and abortion.

Despite the controversy, the California Superior Court has ruled that Pacheco’s case has merit and will go to trial. The race between Steel and Tran is considered crucial for Republicans in November and recent polls show the race as a dead heat.

The Cook PVI ranks Steel’s district as D+2, making her one of the few Republicans defending seats in Democrat-majority districts. The lines of the district changed slightly after the 2020 census. The election is closely watched as both candidates vie for the Orange County seat.
