Redondo Union girls’ volleyball team displayed their grit and mental toughness in a thrilling sweep of Mater Dei, snapping the Monarchs’ 28-match winning streak. Led by junior outside hitter Abby Zimmerman, who had 13 kills, the Sea Hawks outplayed Mater Dei with strong defense and relentless determination. Coach Tommy Chaffins praised the team’s performance, highlighting their mental toughness and ability to push through difficult moments.
The team’s early California commit, Zimmerman, proved why she is considered one of the top players in Southern California with her stellar performance. Middle blocker Sienna Castillo added eight kills and a crucial ace that helped secure the first set for Redondo. Addi Junk’s serving prowess also played a key role in closing out the match.
Mater Dei, the reigning CIF state Open Division champion, was missing key players due to injuries and transfers, but coach Dan O’Dell offered no excuses. The Monarchs, who graduated several starters from last season, were unable to match Redondo’s aggressive serving and defensive prowess.
The victory was a significant early test for Redondo, who are aiming to reclaim their Southern Section title after their last win in 2019. The Sea Hawks showed great determination and skill in avenging last season’s defeat to Mater Dei and proving their ability to compete at a high level. The team’s fantastic fan support and exciting gameplay left the crowd exhilarated and eager for more thrilling matches in the future.
