Arctic Aviation Command was officially formalized in a ceremony on August 8, consisting of two aviation battalions. The 1-25 Attack Battalion provides a wide range of aircraft for large-scale combat operations within the 11th Airborne Division, while the U.S. Army’s only active duty arctic medevac company is part of the command as well. Equipped with specialized helicopters designed for the unique climate of Alaska, including features like retractable skis for arctic operations, flir, and storm scopes for remote and variable weather conditions, and training in dynamic hoisting techniques for patient safety. Major Jeffrey William Crook highlighted the capabilities of the HH-60 “Mike” helicopters, including forward-looking infrared technology for increased visibility in obscure areas. The unit also operates in extreme temperatures, with maintenance tasks requiring them to work in conditions as cold as negative-40 degrees. Despite these challenges, the unit is always prepared and ready to respond to emergencies 24/7. The Arctic Aviation Command plays a critical role in providing emergency medical evacuation services and combat support operations in the remote and challenging environment of Alaska.
