Ukraine war briefing: Citizens overwhelmed with despair as Russian missiles and drones continue to strike without response from authorities | Ukraine

Ukraine’s air defense systems were put to the test during a recent Russian drone attack, with at least seven people killed and widespread damage reported. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on Western allies to provide more support, specifically in terms of air defense and the ability to strike deep into Russian territory. The Ukrainian air force intercepted over 100 missiles and 100 drones launched by Russian forces, with 15 regions sustaining damage.

Several critical infrastructure sites were targeted, including a hydropower plant and an oil refinery in Siberia, leading to casualties and significant damage. The attack on an oil refinery in Omsk, far from the Ukrainian border, highlights the breadth of Russia’s military actions.

President Joe Biden condemned the attack, labeling it as “outrageous,” while Poland reported a Russian drone violating its airspace during the barrage against Ukraine. NATO member Poland is actively searching for the drone, which is believed to be of Iranian design and employed by the Russian army.

Meanwhile, Switzerland hosted a commemoration event for the Geneva Conventions, with Russia notably absent, labeling the meeting a “waste of time.” The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine has also taken a toll on journalists, with a Reuters journalist critically injured in a missile strike on a hotel in Kramatorsk.

The situation remains tense as Ukraine’s forces continue to push back against Russian attacks in various regions. President Zelenskiy vowed to strengthen defenses in crucial areas, including the eastern strategic hub of Pokrovsk, where Russian forces are intensifying their efforts.
