Sun comes from behind to defeat Sparks in heartbreaker – Daily News

The Connecticut Sun secured a 69-61 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in the first WNBA game played at the Boston Celtics’ TD Garden in front of a record sellout crowd of 19,125. DiJonai Carrington led the Sun with 19 points, while Brionna Jones and Tyasha Harris added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Despite struggling at the free-throw line, Connecticut used a late 14-0 run to overcome a four-point deficit and seal the win.

The Sparks, led by Azura Stevens and Rickea Jackson with 14 points each, were unable to capitalize on their chances, shooting just 2 for 19 from beyond the arc and committing 22 turnovers. All-Star Dearica Hamby contributed nine points, 10 rebounds, and three steals in the losing effort. The loss marked the Sparks’ fifth consecutive defeat and their 15th in the last 17 games, dropping their road record to 2-12 for the season.

Connecticut’s head coach Curt Miller was ejected late in the game as his team held on to secure the victory. The Sun had three players in double figures, with Carrington, Harris, and Jones leading the charge to turn the game in their favor. Despite trailing early on, Connecticut bounced back to take control and held off the Sparks’ comeback attempts.

Up next, the Sparks will face the Washington Mystics on Friday at 4:30 p.m. PT as they look to bounce back from their recent struggles on the road. The Sun, on the other hand, will aim to build on their strong performance as they continue their push towards the playoffs.
