Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and the members of the LAUSD Board of Education are being accused of playing a game of three-card monte at the June 18 school board meeting. Carvalho is accused of using sleight of hand to hide the fact that hundreds of elementary schools in LA did not receive promised additional arts teachers due to a misappropriation of funds. One LAUSD math teacher, Dan Chang, has uncovered the budgetary shell game and is running for the LAUSD Board of Education seat in District 3 to put an end to fraud, waste, and abuse.
Chang has assembled a toolkit to help every elementary school in LAUSD determine how much money and how many arts teachers they are owed by the district. He is challenging Superintendent Carvalho and the school board members to own up to the mistakes of the past and make every elementary school whole for their missing arts teachers. Chang hopes that armed with this knowledge, school communities will force the district to do what is right. LAUSD has been accused of playing games with its budget in the past, and Chang is determined to bring transparency and accountability to the district.
The missing arts teachers scandal has led to calls for change within LAUSD, and Chang’s campaign for the Board of Education seat in District 3 is gaining momentum as he fights to hold the superintendent and board members accountable. LAUSD is facing scrutiny for its handling of funds and resources, and Chang is determined to bring about positive change for students and educators within the district.
