Severe Storms Strike Northeast, Causing Flash Floods and Water Rescues as Cars Are Submerged

Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast caused flash flooding in the tristate area, with roads turning into rivers and cars becoming submerged in fast-rising waters. Parts of Connecticut and New York experienced historic rainfall, with up to 10 inches falling in 12 hours in some areas. A flash flood emergency was declared in Suffolk County, New York, and water rescues were ongoing in Long Island. Multiple deaths were reported, including one person missing after being swept away in Connecticut and a man found dead in Virginia due to a fallen tree. The intense rain also forced evacuations in cities like Danbury, Connecticut, and impacted transportation with rail services suspended and airports experiencing ground stops.

The rainfall, which is not related to Hurricane Ernesto, is caused by a slow-moving cold front generating thunderstorms. More rain and thunderstorms are expected in the Northeast and New England, with flooding likely in areas like New Haven, Hartford, and Springfield. Additional rain amounts of 1 to 4 inches are possible, further worsening the flooding situation in the region. Governor officials are assessing the damage and declaring states of emergency as the cleanup and recovery efforts continue in the wake of the devastating storms.
