A luxury superyacht sank near Palermo, Sicily during a violent storm, resulting in at least one death and six people missing. The 184-ft sailboat carrying 22 individuals sank due to weather conditions following a strong storm and tornado. Fifteen people, including a 1-year-old baby, were rescued by a nearby ship. The captain of the rescue ship described the intense hurricane gusts that caused the sinking. Seven adults were taken to the emergency room, with none in serious condition. The rest of the survivors were being treated at a children’s hospital or held by the Port Authority. Divers, motorboats, and helicopters were deployed to search for the missing individuals in the sunken vessel. The yacht, named the Bayesian, was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini and had a capacity of 12 guests and a crew of up to 10. The vessel was last tracked off the coast of Palermo before the sinking. The incident has left many shocked and saddened, with one local resident expressing disbelief in a Facebook post. Italy’s coast guard and other organizations are assisting in the search and rescue efforts as the investigation into the tragedy continues.
