Angels plummet to last in AL West standings after defeat by Braves

Ramón Laureano shined with a home run in the Atlanta Braves’ 3-1 victory over the Angels on Sunday, wrapping up a successful 10-game road trip. Laureano, who has historically troubled the Angels during his time with the Oakland Athletics, hit his 14th homer against them in just 69 games. His contribution, along with Charlie Morton’s strong pitching performance and Raisel Iglesias’ save, led the Braves to a 6-4 record on the trip. Manager Brian Snitker praised the team’s effort on the West Coast, considering their upcoming series against NL East leader Philadelphia crucial in their wild-card chase.

However, the Braves suffered a setback when third baseman Austin Riley left the game early due to an injury to his right hand, with further tests scheduled for Monday. Morton had a solid outing, only giving up one run on two hits in 5⅓ innings, helping secure the win for Atlanta.

On the Angels’ side, Brandon Drury’s single led to their only run in the fifth inning. Manager Ron Washington highlighted the team’s struggles to capitalize on opportunities, leading to their fifth loss in six games at home. The Angels, now in last place in the AL West, are also facing injury concerns with Anthony Rendon’s absence and a season-worst 18 games under .500.

Looking ahead, the Angels will hope to bounce back as they face Kansas City, while the Braves prepare for a crucial series against Philadelphia in their quest for the playoffs. The Braves’ strong showing on the road trip has them in a good position for a postseason push, despite the challenges they face in the final stretch of the season.
