Van Gogh and Cezanne Artworks safe after fire at Somerset House in London

Priceless paintings by artists such as Monet, Cezanne, and Van Gogh were unharmed after a fire broke out in the roof of Somerset House in central London. Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which was primarily contained in the west wing of the building, away from the area where the artworks were housed. The cause of the fire was under investigation, and staff and the public were safely evacuated from the building. The fire did not affect The Courtauld Gallery, which features famous works by artists like Van Gogh and Rubens. The gallery was scheduled to reopen the following day. Somerset House, a neoclassical building reconstructed 250 years ago, has a rich history, with Queen Elizabeth I having lived there as a princess before becoming queen and the original palace being demolished due to neglect. Despite the challenging nature of the fire due to the building’s design, firefighters were able to prevent significant damage to the historic structure and its valuable contents. The venue, which was set to host a breakdancing event celebrating the sport’s debut at the Paris Olympics, was temporarily closed as a result of the fire.
