Michael Eugene Mullen, 75, was arrested in Idaho in connection with the shooting death of Nina “Nadine” Fischer in California in 1973. Fischer, a Swedish national, was found sexually assaulted and shot three times in her home with her 2-year-old daughter unharmed. The case went cold until DNA evidence linked Mullen to the crime. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office sent the case to the California Department of Justice’s Familial Search Program, which eventually led to Mullen as a suspect. He is currently being held in jail awaiting extradition to California. Mullen’s defense attorney did not respond to requests for comment. The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Idaho State Police and the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office. Fischer’s husband discovered her body when he returned home from work, and despite questioning witnesses at the time, no leads were found until DNA evidence connected Mullen to the crime. The case highlights the importance of advancements in technology, such as DNA analysis, in solving cold cases.
