Deputy Brandon Cunningham of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office was killed while responding to a domestic dispute in northwestern Georgia, marking the first time the office has lost a deputy in the line of duty. Cunningham and another deputy were met with gunfire from a suspect upon arriving at the home, resulting in Cunningham being struck and killed in what Sheriff Gary Gulledge described as an “ambush.” The female victim from the dispute was also shot and is in stable condition at an Atlanta hospital. The male suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cunningham, a 30-year-old deputy who joined the office in 2020, leaves behind two children. The tragic incident has shaken the entire department, with Sheriff Gulledge asking for prayers for Cunningham’s family and the law enforcement community as a whole. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will continue to investigate the case.
