Chargers Training Camp Day 18: Justin Herbert No Longer in Walking Boot; Easton Stick Presented with Major Opportunity

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert made a significant step in his recovery from a plantar fascia injury as he appeared on the practice field without a walking boot for the first time since the diagnosis on July 31. Coach Jim Harbaugh expressed optimism about Herbert’s progress, stating that he is on track with the timeline set by the medical staff. While Herbert did not participate in Thursday’s practice, his presence without the boot is seen as a positive sign.

In terms of the quarterback competition, Easton Stick will start for the Chargers in the upcoming preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. Stick has been in a close competition with Luis Perez and Max Duggan, with Stick showing improvements in practice this week. Stick’s performance in the upcoming game will be crucial as he aims to secure the backup quarterback role behind Herbert.

In other roster updates, the Chargers signed interior defensive lineman Teair Tart and waived rookie safety Jalyn Phillips. Tart impressed in practice, showcasing his quickness and strong hands. Harbaugh highlighted Tart’s potential fit with the team and expressed satisfaction with his performance in his first practice.

Several players, including Khalil Mack and Derwin James, will not play in Saturday’s game, providing opportunities for others like receiver Ladd McConkey and Joshua Palmer to see more playing time. Despite the absence of key players in practice, Harbaugh is focused on evaluating the best players to determine the final roster as the season approaches.
