Some Bay Area teenagers aged 16 and 17 will have a unique opportunity to participate in the upcoming school board elections in Oakland and Berkeley. Thanks to the passage of Measure Y1 in Berkeley and Measure QQ in Oakland, these older teenagers will be able to cast ballots in local district elections, though they are still ineligible to vote in higher-profile races such as those for president or Congress. The state already has a pre-registration system for 16- and 17-year-olds which will be used to allow them to vote in school board elections, according to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.
Alameda County Registrar of Voters Tim Dupuis expressed gratitude towards the Board of Supervisors for their support in making this initiative possible. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao emphasized the importance of extending voting rights to younger citizens, stating that it will foster a culture of civic participation from an early age. The goal of this new policy is to increase youth voter turnout, though the impact of this change remains to be seen until the polls close.
While some teenagers like 17-year-old Naseem Bennett may not be particularly interested in politics, the opportunity to vote in the upcoming school board elections may prompt them to consider participating. This historic decision to allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in local elections is a significant step towards engaging younger citizens in the democratic process.
