The international mediators involved in talks to end the war in Sudan have welcomed decisions by the warring sides to facilitate humanitarian relief in the country. The sponsors of the talks, including the US, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and others, praised the commitment of the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces to cooperate in delivering aid to Darfur and Kordofan states. This will help address famine, food insecurity, and humanitarian needs in the region.
The talks taking place in Geneva aim to end the conflict that began last year and has caused one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. More than 25 million people in Sudan are facing acute hunger, with parts of North Darfur already declared a famine zone. The US has been leading efforts to negotiate peace and alleviate suffering in Sudan, calling on the Sudanese Armed Forces to join the discussions.
The war in Sudan has displaced over 10 million people and triggered a public health disaster, including a cholera outbreak that has claimed hundreds of lives. The conflict stems from power struggles between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces, with both sides urged to avoid civilian harm and allow humanitarian access.
Despite efforts to establish civilian rule in Sudan after the ousting of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir, the country has experienced political turmoil, including a military coup in 2021. The Sudanese military has since engaged in fighting with the RSF, leading to further instability in the region. The international community is calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict to prevent further suffering among the Sudanese population.
