Former professional football player Cierre Wood was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years for the murder of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter in April 2019. He also received a sentence of 28 months to six years for the child abuse charge, with the two sentences to be served consecutively. Wood pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse in April, reaching a deal with prosecutors in which they dismissed other child abuse charges. He entered an Alford plea, maintaining his innocence while admitting guilt.
Wood played for the University of Notre Dame and had brief stints in the NFL and Canadian Football League. The child’s mother, Amy Taylor, also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse as part of a deal with prosecutors. The child, La’Rayah Davis, died on April 9, 2019, from blunt force injuries according to the coroner’s office in Las Vegas.
Wood’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the sentencing. The case highlights the tragic consequences of child abuse and the criminal justice system’s response to such cases, ultimately holding the perpetrators accountable for their actions.
