LA councilman advocates for banning counterfeit printer cartridges, reports Daily News

Los Angeles City Councilman John Lee has proposed a ban on counterfeit printer cartridges in an effort to address environmental concerns related to plastic waste. Lee introduced a motion that would prohibit the distribution and sale of knockoff cartridges, which he claims make up the majority of printer cartridges that end up in landfills. The cartridges can take hundreds of years to decompose and contain hazardous chemicals. The motion is set to be reviewed by the council’s Energy and Environment Committee. Lee emphasized the importance of minimizing waste in neighborhoods, particularly near landfills like the Sunshine Canyon Landfill. Sean Levi, CEO of a Chatsworth-based ink cartridge remanufacturing company, Planet Green, voiced support for the potential ban, highlighting how knockoff cartridges have negatively impacted the local economy by reducing jobs in the remanufacturing industry. The ban aims to raise awareness of the issue and build on the city’s environmental achievements. The proposal comes as part of Lee’s efforts to address long-standing environmental challenges and pave the way forward on sustainability issues in Los Angeles.
