A fast-moving wildfire in California’s San Bernardino area destroyed several homes on Monday, prompting evacuations as hundreds of firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The Edgehill fire originated in the Shandin Hills area and quickly spread through the neighborhood, burning homes and forcing residents to flee. Despite triple-digit temperatures worsening the situation, firefighters were able to stop the forward progress of the fire by early evening. As of Monday, the blaze had consumed 54 acres and was 25% contained.
Arson investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire, with one person briefly detained and then released by police. The extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 100F, posed additional challenges for firefighters. In northern California, the Park fire continued to rage, destroying homes and burning over 400,000 acres in Tehama and Butte counties.
As crews faced higher temperatures and lower humidity in the coming days, they remained vigilant in battling the north-eastern portion of the Park fire. The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for the region until Tuesday night, with temperatures expected to soar to 110F. The affected communities remained on high alert, with residents of Little Mountain being familiar with the fire threat and quick to evacuate as the flames spread. News outlets captured heartbreaking scenes of homes reduced to ash, illustrating the devastation caused by the wildfire.
