Protests escalate in Venezuela as election results are challenged and more people are arrested

Thousands of Venezuelans protested across the country over the contested election results, with President Nicolas Maduro claiming victory in last Sunday’s vote. The electoral authority declared Maduro the winner with 51% of the vote, sparking allegations of fraud and protests. Security forces cracked down on demonstrations, resulting in the arrest of about 2,000 people. Maduro warned of “maximum punishment” for those involved in the protests.

Supporters of Maduro claimed they were defending democracy, while opposition supporters demanded justice. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who emerged from hiding, joined protests in Caracas. Demonstrations also took place in other cities, with at least 20 people killed in post-election protests and around 1,200 arrested.

The Organization of American States called for peace in Venezuela and urged no more political prisoners or violence. Some countries, including the U.S. and Argentina, have recognized opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez as the election’s winner based on “overwhelming evidence.” Other countries like Russia, China, and Cuba have congratulated Maduro.

The ongoing protests and clashes highlight the deep political divisions in Venezuela following the election. The situation remains tense as the government cracks down on dissent while the opposition continues to demand justice and recognition of the election results.
