Team USA’s Bobby Finke made history at the Paris Olympics by breaking a 12-year-old world record to win his second straight Olympic gold medal in the men’s 1,500m freestyle. Finke set a new world mark of 14:30.67, beating the previous best of 14:31.02 set by Sun Yang in 2012. Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri took silver, and Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen claimed bronze.
The American swimmer led from the start of the race, with Paltrinieri narrowing the gap around the 850-meter mark. However, Finke had enough energy left for the final laps, finishing 3.88 seconds ahead of the Italian. Wiffen, who had won gold in the 800m freestyle, finished 8.96 seconds behind Finke.
In another thrilling race, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom won her second gold medal of the Olympics in the women’s 50m freestyle. Sjostrom touched in 23.71 seconds, just shy of her world record of 23.61. She dominated the race from start to finish, with Australia’s Meg Harris taking silver and China’s Zhang Yufei winning bronze.
The Paris Olympics swimming competition ended with a spectacular performance from Finke and Sjostrom, who both displayed remarkable speed and determination in their respective events. Finke’s world record-breaking swim and Sjostrom’s convincing victory in the 50m freestyle solidified their status as two of the best swimmers in the world.
