Massive landslides triggered by heavy rains have resulted in at least 89 deaths in Kerala, India. Dozens are still feared trapped in the hilly areas of Wayanad district. Rescue efforts are hampered by ongoing rain and the collapse of a crucial bridge. More than 200 army personnel are aiding in search and rescue operations, with local hospitals treating over 129 injured individuals. The landslides, the worst disaster since the deadly floods in 2018, have impacted several areas in Wayanad. Videos circulating on social media show the devastation caused by the landslides, with homes washed away and people stranded.
A bridge connecting two areas has collapsed, making it difficult for rescue personnel to reach affected families. Local residents are also contributing to the rescue efforts. Despite challenges posed by strong river currents and heavy rains, relief operations are ongoing. The district and neighboring areas remain on alert due to the forecast of further heavy rains.
The tragic event has attracted national attention, with Vice-President Jagdeep Singh Dhankar and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressing concern and offering support. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged government assistance and announced compensation for the victims and their families. The situation remains grave, with authorities warning that casualties may increase as rescue efforts continue.
