U.S. water polo captain Maggie Steffens is competing in the Paris Olympics with a heavy heart after her sister-in-law, Lulu Conner, passed away just days before the Games started. Lulu had traveled to Paris to support Steffens in her pursuit of a fourth consecutive gold medal. Steffens described Lulu as the “light of the world” and someone who brought joy to everyone.
Despite her grief, Steffens scored two goals in the first game of the women’s tournament, helping the U.S. team to a victory over Greece. She expressed that playing helps her to honor Lulu’s memory and embody her spirit. Steffens is the highest scoring woman in Olympic water polo history, with 58 goals.
Steffens is married to Bobby Conner, Lulu’s brother, and they had just married in November. Lulu was an artist and a UC Davis graduate, and she was one of three siblings. At the opening ceremony, Steffens dropped a bouquet of flowers into the Seine River in remembrance of Lulu.
The situation is reminiscent of the 2016 Olympics, when coach Adam Krikorian lost his brother before the Games. Krikorian emphasized the importance of supporting Steffens and her family during this difficult time, allowing her to spend time with her loved ones while also competing in the Games. Steffens is grateful for the support of her team and hopes to make Lulu proud with her performance at the Olympics.
