In the western US, over 100 wildfires are causing devastation, with a massive blaze spreading rapidly in California at a rate of eight square miles an hour. The Park Fire in Butte County has already destroyed more than 130 homes, prompting comparisons to the deadly Camp Fire of 2018. Authorities are attributing the blaze to a 42-year-old man who pushed a burning car into a gully, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
Across the US, there are currently 110 active fires covering 2,800 square miles, with reports of homes being destroyed in Idaho and Washington. In Oregon, the Durkee Fire is the largest in the country, burning almost 630 square miles and remaining only 20% contained. In the Canadian Rockies town of Jasper, Alberta, a “wall of fire” reaching 328 feet high has led to the evacuation of 25,000 people, with fears that up to half the town’s buildings have been lost.
The situation is dire, with firefighters facing challenges due to the significant amount of fuel available in the affected areas. The ongoing wildfires are a cause for concern, as residents and officials work to contain the blazes and minimize the damage and destruction caused by these natural disasters.
