The third annual Long Beach Disability Pride Celebration took place on Friday, July 26, showcasing pride and community spirit in downtown Long Beach. The event, held in honor of Disability Pride and Empowerment Month, brought together members of the disability community, their families, and allies to celebrate achievements and contributions. This year also marked the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Speakers at the event included disability rights advocates, council members, and activists who highlighted the importance of Disability Pride in shifting the narrative from viewing disability as a deficiency to recognizing it as an integral part of identity and humanity. Mayor Rex Richardson and other leaders emphasized the significance of the Americans with Disabilities Act in ensuring rights and opportunities for people with disabilities in all areas of public life.
The celebration featured a special performance by Kaylee Bays, a featured dancer in a wheelchair on “So You Think You Can Dance,” who captivated the audience with her dance routines. Attendees enjoyed music, free food, resource booths, and networking opportunities, creating a space for education, awareness, and community building.
The event, held at Harvey Milk Promenade Park, had over 70 attendees and served as a platform for promoting disability inclusion and celebrating the strength and resilience of individuals with disabilities.
