LAFC defeats Club Tijuana in Leagues Cup opener with strong performances from Cristian Olivera and Dénis Bouanga

Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) dominated Club Tijuana in a 3-0 victory in the Leagues Cup group stage. Dynamic wingers Dénis Bouanga and Cristian Olivera scored and assisted each other in an eventful first half, with Olivera scoring in the 9th minute and Bouanga adding a goal in the 43rd minute. LAFC’s Eduard Atuesta set up Bouanga for another close chance that Olivera capitalized on to score his second goal of the night. LAFC’s goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, kept a clean sheet.

The match was marred by a nine-minute delay after Tijuana midfielder Christian Rivera was knocked unconscious. Tijuana’s head coach Juan Carlos Osorio received a red card for his reaction to the incident. LAFC’s win secured three points in the Leagues Cup group stage, positioning them well for their next match against Vancouver.

LAFC, who previously advanced directly to the knockout stage in the Leagues Cup due to their MLS Cup title, is now experiencing group stage competition for the first time. The tournament consists of 47 MLS and Liga MX clubs, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the knockout rounds. LAFC will face Monterrey, Pumas, or Austin FC in the Round of 32 if they progress, aiming for a spot in the final on August 25. More updates on this story to follow.
