A rocket attack on a soccer field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights killed at least 10 people, including children, following an Israeli airstrike on south Lebanon that killed three members of Hezbollah. The attack, claimed by Hezbollah in retaliation for Israeli attacks on a village in Lebanon, resulted in multiple civilian casualties. The Israeli military accused Hezbollah of launching the rocket and causing the deaths and injuries.
Hezbollah denied targeting Majdal Shams, where the rocket struck, and claimed that its attack was in response to Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. Israeli authorities initially reported 11 people wounded, nine critically, and most between the ages of 10 and 20. The town’s local council leader referred to the attack as crossing a red line and called for targeting top Hezbollah commanders.
The exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified since the war in Gaza began in October, with daily attacks on both sides. The Israeli military has conducted airstrikes in Lebanon, resulting in hundreds of casualties, while Hezbollah has launched rockets and drones towards Israeli territory. The tensions between the two foes have heightened fears of a broader conflict in the region. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and annexed them in 1981 during the Six-Day War.
